Perry's first book has been described as "side splittingly
funny in parts and tear-jerkingly sad in others." Read

Chapter 32
"Christmas Eve was
eighty-five degrees in Los Angeles, and sunny and perfect
after a month of cold weather. I think Nature felt bad for
all the times it had tried to kill me over the years, with bug
bites and poison ivy and other various and sundry tools of
imminent pain and danger. In an effort to make nice, it
appeared Nature was giving me a Christmas that seemed more
like a Fourth of July barbecue so I’d feel less maudlin and
drippy about the holidays.
"I decided to go to the
grocery store and get some beer and other essentials before it
got too late and the stores closed, or in case Nature changed
its mind and gave us a tornado or earthquake.
"I did not realize that
every single resident of the greater Los Angeles area and
their entire extended families from out of town would also be
at the market. It was packed. Every shopper was in a hurry,
ramming their buggies right into you. I was their worst
nightmare come true, the most torturous sort of shopper—lazy
and plodding in flip-flops, sunglasses on my head, tank top
(!), pretending it was summer, and not the least bit in a
hurry."
